Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) is a typical cross-disciplinary product, a new technique for the near-net-shape processing of metal parts by introducing modern plastic injection moulding technology into the field of powder metallurgy. It is a high technology that has developed very rapidly in recent years in the discipline and industry of powder metallurgy. It enables designers to break free from traditional constraints and obtain low-cost, shaped stainless steel, nickel, iron, copper, titanium and other metal parts by plastic forming, thus having greater design freedom than many other production processes.
The process steps in MIM are: firstly, metal powders are selected to meet the requirements of MIM and organic binders are mixed into a homogeneous feed material using appropriate methods at a certain temperature, then granulated and injected into the cavity of the mould using an injection moulding machine in a heated plasticised state to obtain a forming blank, which is then degreased by chemical or solvent extraction and finally sintered to densify the final product.
